Dundurn Castle was constructed by Sir Allan MacNab between 1832 and 1835. At the time of its construction, Sir Allan's residence was one of the largest private homes in the province of Upper Canada. Italianate in design the house features large twin towers on the bay side overlooking Burlington Bay below. Attached to the main residence is a west wing where domestic duties were performed by the household servants. The Castle underwent a restoration in the 1960s when a team of professional architects and historians began a programme of investigation aimed at restoring the house to its 1855 appearance. Beginning in 1991, the restoration work focused on the exterior. The original stucco and paint exterior finish was removed and replaced using original materials and methods.
