Bessborough Hotel - Saskatoon
The Bessborough Hotel shown in this postcard stands at the foot of 21st Street overlooking the river and is probably
Saskatoon's best-known landmark. Construction began in 1930 but was not completed until 1935 because of financial problems.
"In the French medieval style, it was built of granite and orange brick with Tyndall stone decoartions....The lower floors
were granite with arched windows and iron gratings to give the feeling of a fortress." (Saving Our City, p. 10). The
bandstand was built to honour those Canadians who fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. It was officially dedicated on
September 1, 1937.
The newly restored grand castle stands tall on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, a magical place from a past era
with all the modern amenities; it is Saskatchewan's crowning jewel. A historic landmark, Delta Bessborough's regal stature
dominates Saskatoon's downtown skyline. Its presence is enhanced by an Elizabethan terrace and five acres of gardens, beyond
which the river flows.
